Online predators prey on unsuspecting and gullible internet users, and unfortunately, they have unprecedented access to your kids on the internet. One of their modus operandi is to send your child random gifts and bribes, or even send threats just to gain access to their victims. How will you spot the gift-giving warning sign?
If you see your child receiving stuff from someone you don’t know from the internet, then you should be suspicious, as he/she can be an online predator. The gift-giving strategy is more subtle than sending roses with a calling card in your front door. Most often than not, these gifts are digital gifts, and can only be accessed through the internet.
Teens and tweens are usually the biggest audience of digital entertainment. Online predators understand this, which is why most often than not, gifts are in the form of downloadables, such as your child’s favorite movie, music, ebook, or even games. What is more frightening about this is that, you may never know a thing about it, as these items don’t enter your home. Rather, it goes straight to your computer.
Some predators out there use tokens of affection, such as emails or private messages to connect with your child. Some may even include meet ups.
Make sure you know how your child uses the computer. Know how much money he access to on a regular basis. Predators know how money and items can easily lure kids to do what they want to do. If you see something suspicious, then you better be wary and talk to your child about it.
