There are many children and young adults that are naturally equal if not more superior to adults in terms of using the internet. However, being an expert in the use of computers does not mean that they already have the wisdom and life-experience to make the right decisions while they are online. Most of the time, they still need the guidance and supervision of adults when accessing the internet. Without proper guidance and supervision, these children are exposing themselves to countless risks every time they use the internet.
Young adults and children are susceptible to many risks when they use the internet. Some of the risks include identity theft, fraud, scam emails and spam just like everyone else. Aside from that, they often expose themselves to more dangerous situations by meeting persons through social networks that have plans to bully, exploit and abuse them. Using the internet also exposes them to inappropriate material. They might also install software that steals personal information or they might accidentally download viruses, malwares and worms.
When children are watched by their teacher, guardian, parent or other responsible adult, there are many precautions that they can use to safeguard the children against the risks. Installing software to watch over what they access is a good example. Supervising adults can also place simple rules for internet use and control the amount of time that children spend on the internet. When these safety precautions are applied, children will become safe and parents will have sound sleep knowing that their kids are safe.
