Research shows that 9 out of 10 kids, ages 8 to 16 years old have seen pornographic materials on the Internet. That’s according to Safe Families website, a program from TechMission, Inc. which aims to help parents protect their kids from the dangers there is in the Internet. This is where the importance of Parental Controls comes into the picture.
Parental Controls are designed to give parents the power to take full control of their children’s content access while surfing the internet in their computers. So how do you set-up Parental Control? Here’s how:
First Step
Click “Start” button > “Control Panel” then head to “User Accounts.” Click “Parental Control” from the “User Accounts” submenu.
Second Step
Set up the controls by carefully choosing the content you allow your kids to access and set content limit. You can also check the time limit for computer use from there. One of the most important things you can do here is to set the restrictions to limit the sites your kids can access. Put descriptions to the games and make sure they’re accessible by your kids. Specify those programs that your kids can access, then click save to save the changes made.
Third Step
Click “On” from the Parental Control to activate the changes made. Test the settings by checking if you can access those sites and programs blocked. You can adjust the settings when needed. Also, consulting your computer program’s manual can be of great help to help you better understand your computer. Make sure the changes you’ve made are applicable to your child and their computer needs.
Fourth Step
Identify the setting in your kids’ user accounts. Make sure your Parental Controls work appropriately as you’ve specified. Also, set-up a simple password for your kids to log-in to their accounts. Of course, you need to restrict administrative controls to keep kids from changing any settings in the computer.
